Check out the PowerShot S3Is
|
Well looking at the specs and pictures of this model I have to say I’m starting to drool. It looks a bit like my old D50, which I love, so its screams REAL CAMERA to me. But I’m looking at the optics, oh my…
Whenever I’m looking at cameras the first thing I focus on (no pun, word-play, or other cleverness intended) is the lens. The lense is, pretty much as far as I’m concerned, where it’s at. And this lense is impressive.
It has a 12x optical zoom! Does that sound impressive to you?
Well, let’s put it another way.
The lens is 36 – 432mm f/2.7-f.3.5. That’s 36mm WIDE. Not bad at all, I always like to go wider if I can but on the standard fitted lens this is pretty cool. Now, it zooms all the way to 432mm, which is not far off a 500mm lense. This is awesome, really!
Now for the f/stop business. f/2.7 (is great) at the wide end of 36mm, darn good. f/3.5 at the zoomed 432mm end, darn good again. Aparrently these specs are the same as the EF series professional lenses, so not to be sneezed at!
Question is; what do the pics look like?

Still with me? Good!
The next thing I’m really interested in is video mode because although my beloved wants a camera for taking pictures lets face it, unless you’ve been living under a rock you know video is in, its cool and we can share it even easier than our still photos too!
First off, there is apparently a dedicated movie button which means you don’t have to switch modes to start recording video, so that’s good. Also you can apparently be recording video and take still shots at the same time, which is double good (unbeleivable actually).
Plus it supports true widescreen at 16:9 for playing back on a widescreen televison or in video website widescreen format too. That’s 2816 x 1584 recording pixels, by the way. Don’t think for one minute that just because its ONLY 6.0 mega pixels that means its somehwhat low spec. Thats ridiculous, at 6.0 mega pixels you have all the color depth and depth of field you could ever need, unless of course you’re a real pro and not an amateur or enthusiast and you have to shoot and then blow up tiny parts of the overall image to get the shot you really wanted… enough said!
Ok, let’s see if we can find some video ![]()
Here’s a really cool low-light example, very impressed with this. You’ll find some related videos here too. Remember, these are all amateur, imaging what you could do with your skills…
Here’s a cnet review for you too;
Ok, wrapping up here, I like this thin alot and it’s going to remain at the top of my list as I look at all the other models.
Only negatives as I see them at the moment are;
-
Electonic viewfinder; never used one. Apparently its ok, not sure I’d want it but as long as it works, thats progress for you!
-
Small LCD display at only 2 inches. But having said that, I would use the eye-piece view finder for regular photography anyway. A bigger lcd would of been nice but it;s not the end of the world…
Here are the Canon PowerShot S3Is full specs for you (in case you’re interested

I’ve had this camera for over a month now, and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. The XSi is very user-friendly (as long as you read the manual
), but I still encourage any potential buyers who are new to DSLR/SLR photography to do plenty of research before buying.I printed some images taken with my XSi and am very pleased with the results. The images made up a 14.25″ x 11″ calendar and they were very sharp and clear, unlike images taken with my parents’ old Point
I was searching for information on lenses for my canon 500D when I found your site. Great post. Thank You.
Hey mate, when looking at your site i see some kind of weird codes all over the page, in case it’s important I just thought I’d let you know it says this with all sorts of other stuff after it: “Warning: Cannot modify header information ? headers already sent in wp-settings.php line 12″
Between me and my wife we’ve bought more electronic cameras over the months than I can count, including many different Canons, Coolpixes, Samsungs, Nikons and many more models. But, the last few weeks I’ve settled down to one line of digital cameras. Why? Because I was satisfied to take take notice of how well-designed and thrilling the underappreciated (and widely laughed at) Canon EOS Rebel T2 actually is. With it I have been able to take the most awesome pictures. That’s all I wanted to tell, hope you have a enjoyable day and make sure to take some stunning photos!
