Check out the PowerShot SX20Is
|
If the PowerShot S3Is had me all a quiver, then this puppy at first glance is blowing my mind. It looks like a REAL CAMERA to me. But I’m completely stunned by the optics, lets check this out…
If you’ve read any of my other reviews you’ll know I look at the optics as being of the utmost importance. Well, how about this…
A 20x optical zoom! I thought 12 was great on the S3Is, but 20x? So what does this mean?
The lens is 28mm WIDE to 560mm LONG. This is huge and incredible!
The f/stop settings are f.2.8 max at 28mm wide, so it’s a point less than the s3Is.
At the incredible 560mm zoom the max f/stop is 5.7, which is a little on the high side, i.e. slower than you would like at full zoom.
If you compare these specs to the S3Is, the Sx20Is is much wider at 28mm. Believe me, 28mm is nice and wide, really good. Its alos much longer at 560mm compared to 432mm on the PowerShot S3Is.
So first impression on the optics is this is incredibly specified and definietly more than adequate for most users.
What about some pics to look at then eh? I fond loads on Flickr, just click on the image below…
So what about movie mode?
Oh goody, it has High Definition movie mode at 720fp resolution. Now I’m not that bothered about high def movie mode to be honest. HD is great but, and its a big but
, at least for me anyway. You have to remeber that HD means much, much, much larger file sizes. So, its great on the camera, even though it uses up more space in memory. However, it gets more problematic (I find) when you get the movie off the camera and want to edit it or load it onto a video sharing website etc.
Just be aware that HD means bigger files and maybe therefore a bigger PC and more bandwith to upload etc.
So what do the movies look like: Umm, yummy…
I really like the look of this camera a lot, especially for the price, which is less than the S3Is. Will it be a good fit for my girlfiend? Oh I definitely think so. Oh, it runs on 4 AA batteries too! Yay!

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)I have owned 35mm cameras since 1968. This is my 1st DSLR. Right out of the box I new I had a winner. It is light, comfortable to hold, well manufactured, and a pleasure to use. The controls are easy to learn. It has a wide variety of settings that should cover any situation. I will recommend this camera to anyone who asks me.
I was searching for information on lenses for my canon 500D when I found your site. Great post. Thank You.
